Energy Law

ESM’s Energy Law course introduces students to legal principles of both federal and state energy law, with a focus on regulated electricity and natural gas industries.

The course, which uses a case study approach, teaches students the fundamental legal frameworks upon which federal and state governments are endeavoring to advance clean energy technologies and decarbonize the electrical grid.

Students participate in discussions during class on assigned real-world historical cases: decisions by courts and administrative agencies to focus on the facts, outcomes, and rationale by the decisional authority. The class culminates in student teams from both the School of Law and the ESM program presenting their own case study, with a focus on emerging issues in the energy industry.
